I Live Next to a Trump Rally 3 Days Before the Election

And now I’m a prisoner in my own home.

When my husband and I decided to move into the neighborhood next to a small regional airport, we weren’t thinking ahead to this day. We were thinking about how it might be fun to have a front-row seat to the annual World War II airshow and not have to pay for parking. We were thinking it would nice to become regulars at the airport restaurant, the only restaurant within walking distance (although we have yet to walk there). And we were thinking it would be an easy way to explain to someone where we live: “Next to the Reading Airport.” “Oh, I know exactly where that is!”

But as I write this, I’m stuck in my house because of our decision to live where we live: a quiet neighborhood with a rarely-used airport, somewhere between urban and rural Pennsylvania, the perfect location for a political rally in a crucial swing state the Saturday before one of the most (if not the most) important elections of our time. It’s the easiest way to get in, fire up the troops, and get out… Easy for Trump, that is. But not for me. I wouldn’t leave my house right now, even if you paid me.

It’s not just the traffic. I can handle that. I can handle road closures and Secret Service detours and lines of buses transporting supporters from offsite, makeshift…
